South Pond is located in Nassau County in Hempstead Lake State Park, directly across from McDonald Pond. South Pond is a mediocre fishery. For the largest size, go for carp. The occasional nice bass or chain pickerel comes out of the pond, but they have to be worked for. Panfish tend to be small. Black crappie were recently introduced and may become an important part of the fishery. Trout are stocked in the fall in late October and often can be caught into the spring, providing a winter fishing opportunity.
